Why This Recipe Works

Air Fryer for ultimate crispiness –  Hot circulating air gives sweet potato fries that crispy exterior without needing a ton of oil, which means less mess and faster cook time than the oven. I love that I can toss them in, shake the basket a few times, and walk away without babysitting a pan! Unlike oven-baked sweet potato fries, the air fryer cooks at high circulating heat, which helps remove surface moisture and creates crispier edges.

Simple seasoning lets the sweet potatoes shine – This easy air fryer sweet potato fries recipe keeps the seasoning simple so the natural sweetness shines, but you can easily customize it. A little garlic powder, paprika, olive oil, and a very generous pinch of salt is all you need. Sweet potatoes already have so much natural flavor that they don’t need much help, just enough seasoning to take them over the top!

Cut size + tossing = better texture – Evenly cut fries and regular tossing during cooking makes a huge difference. I’ve learned (the hard way) that skipping the toss leads to uneven browning, so don’t skip it! A few shakes give you fries that cook evenly and crisp up beautifully.

No soaking required – Unlike some methods, this recipe skips the soaking step and still produces crispy sweet potato fries thanks to the air fryer’s high circulating heat.

Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes: Fresh sweet potatoes are key for the best air fryer sweet potato fries. Avoid overly thin or soft potatoes for best texture.
  • Olive oil: Just enough to help the seasoning stick and promote browning.
  • Garlic powder: Adds savory depth without overpowering the fries.
  • Paprika: Brings mild warmth and color. Smoked paprika is also great here.
  • Kosher salt: Don’t be shy, sweet potatoes need salt to really shine!

Variations & Substitutions

  • Spicy sweet potato fries: Add a pinch of cayenne or chili powder for a bit of spice!
  • Herby fries: Toss with dried rosemary or thyme before air frying for added herby flavor.
  • No garlic: Skip the garlic powder or swap in onion powder instead!
  • Oil-free option: You can reduce the oil, but note the fries won’t get quite as crispy.
  • Keep the peel: I always peel the sweet potatoes before turning them into fries, but you can thoroughly clean the sweet potatoes and keep the peel on if you prefer!

Here’s How to Make It

  1. Preheat air fryer to 355° (if applicable for your air fryer).
  2. Season the Fries: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into fries. Be sure to cut them evenly! Toss with the olive oil, garlic powder, paprika and a very generous amount of salt until they are well coated.
  3. Arrange fries in the pan: Add your potatoes to the pan, making sure not to overcrowd them. A single layer is ideal if you have the space.
  4. Air Fry & Enjoy: Air fry for 25-30 minutes at 355°F, tossing regularly to make sure the fries cook and crisp evenly. Tip: increase the temperature to 375° for the last 3-5 minutes for extra-crispy fries.

Tips & Tricks for Truly Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

  • Avoid stacking! Fries need space for air to circulate, so cook in batches if needed. Overcrowding leads to steaming instead of crisping.
  • Cut evenly for best results. Thin fries will crisp faster, thicker fries will be softer inside. Just try to keep them uniform so they finish cooking at the same time.
  • Pat dry with paper towels before seasoning.
  • For extra crispy sweet potato fries, toss the cut fries with 1–2 teaspoons of cornstarch before adding oil and seasoning.
  • Toss halfway through the cooking process to make sure you are getting them crispy on all sides.
  • Salt at the end if needed. Sweet potatoes can handle more salt than you think, just taste them first before adding additional salt at the end!

How to Serve Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

These crispy air fryer sweet potato fries go with just about anything!! Serve them alongside burgers, chicken sandwiches, or grilled protein for an easy dinner side. I particularly love them with my black bean burgers or my pesto panini sandwiches! They’re also great as a snack with dipping sauces like chipotle mayo, garlic aioli, honey mustard, or ketchup (classic for a reason). When I’m feeling fancy I like to serve them with my favorite Chimichurri Sauce or Creamy Jalapeno Sauce

Honestly? Sometimes they’re perfect all on their own, eaten straight out of the air fryer basket while standing in the kitchen.

FAQs

Why aren’t sweet potato fries as crispy as regular fries?

Sweet potatoes naturally contain more moisture and sugar than other types of potatoes like russet, which makes them a little trickier to crisp. Sweet potatoes contain more natural sugar and moisture than russet potatoes, which makes them softer and more prone to steaming instead of crisping. This is why the air fryer is the ultimate solution for crispy sweet potato fries. The air fryer helps remove surface moisture and promotes browning, but proper spacing, drying the fries, and using a little cornstarch can dramatically improve crispiness.

Why don’t my sweet potato fries get crispy in the air fryer?

Overcrowding is usually the culprit. If the fries are piled on top of each other, they’ll steam instead of crisp. Cooking in batches and tossing regularly makes a big difference.

How long do sweet potato fries take in the air fryer?

Most sweet potato fries take about 25–30 minutes at 355°F, depending on thickness. Thinner fries may finish sooner, while thicker cuts need a little extra time.

How do you store leftover air fryer sweet potato fries?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to bring back some crispiness. Microwaving works, but they’ll be softer.

Should you soak sweet potatoes before air frying?

No, soaking is not necessary for this recipe.

Why are my air fryer sweet potato fries soggy?

Your sweet potato fries may come out a little soggy if you used too much oil, didn’t toss halfway through, or overcrowded the pan. If you have a small pan, you can try air frying them in batches.

What temperature is best for air fryer sweet potato fries?

Cook your air fryer sweet potato fries at 355°F for the perfect combination of crispy exterior and soft insides.
