Why This Recipe Works
Creamy & Dreamy: Are you team ranch or team blue cheese? I love both, but if you are on the fence about blue cheese dressing, you might just change your mind with homemade blue cheese dressing! My recipe for blue cheese dressing is extra creamy and will fulfill all of your dressing dreams. The buttermilk here adds some tang while the sour cream and mayo create a thick and creamy base. You can use your favorite brand of blue cheese, gorgonzola or roquefort!
Simple: I absolutely love making homemade dips and dressings because I know exactly what goes into it, without any extra sugars or preservatives. This recipe for blue cheese dressing is pretty simple, using pantry staples that you probably already have on hand! So it is super simple to whip up, but has all of the flavors that you get with a classic steakhouse blue cheese.
Budget-Friendly: While store-bought blue cheese salad dressing is definitely convenient, homemade dressings are actually much more budget-friendly! Most people already have the majority of these ingredients on hand, and anything that you have to buy can make a ton of different things or a few batches of this best blue cheese dressing!
Ingredients
- Sour Cream, Mayonnaise & Buttermilk: The combination of sour cream, mayo and buttermilk makes a creamy, tangy base for this dressing.
- Blue Cheese: You can buy blue cheese that is already crumbled or crumble it yourself!
- Chives: You can snip the fresh chives with scissors into the mixture or use dry chives in a pinch.
- Lemon Juice: I recommend using fresh lemon juice here. The bottled stuff just doesn’t have the same flavor!
- Garlic Powder: Garlic powder helps to add a deeper savory flavor to the dressing.
- Salt & Pepper: Add salt and pepper to taste!
Here’s How to Make It
Step by Step Instructions
- Mix Everything: Combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, blue cheese, chives, lemon juice and garlic powder in a small bowl and beat with a fork, mashing the blue cheese crumbles into the dressing as you go until the consistency is smooth with just a bit of texture from the remaining cheese. (photos 1-2)
- Season & Adjust: Season to taste with salt and pepper. It should now be dipping consistency for cruditรฉs. For a thinner dressing, thing with milk as required.
- Chill: Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to come together before serving.
Expert Tips
- Don’t skip the chill time! For best results, I like to chill mine for about 8 hours, but you can also just chill it for about 30 minutes so it gets colder and all of those flavors can come together prior to serving!
- Don’t have buttermilk on hand? I understand the issue of having everything on hand except for buttermilk. You can substitute the buttermilk for plain yogurt in a pinch, but it won’t have exactly the same flavor.
- Chunky vs. Smooth: My recipe is written so that you have a slightly chunky blue cheese dressing. But if you want a completely smooth dressing, simply blitz everything together in a blender or food processor and add in the chives at the end!
- If your dressing it too thick, go ahead and add a little bit of milk to thin it out!
Frequently Asked Questions
Blue cheese dressing is super versatile and can be served with so many things! Try serving it with a homemade wedge salad, or toss it with your favorite Cobb salad. You can use it as a dip for fresh veggies, or dip some buffalo hot wings in it!
If you are new to blue cheese, there are quite a few different options out there! Basic American blue cheese is a nice middle ground in terms of flavor. It is creamy and mild, so won’t be too overpowering. You can also try roquefort, which is made from sheep’s milk and is strong in flavor. Then there is stilton, made from cow’s milk and also quite strong in flavor, but not as strong as roquefort. Gorgonzola is another blue cheese that is more mild in flavor but has a nice creamy texture! Any of these blue cheese would work well in this recipe, it all depends on your preference.
Store the blue cheese dressing covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
