Why This Recipe Works
So Easy to Make: This avocado fries recipe is so easy to make! You can make them in the air fryer or the oven, and they come out perfectly crispy either way! Simply slice up your avocados into wedges and then bread them in a flour, egg, breadcrumbs mixture and bake! The flour mixture is seasoned with salt and taco seasoning which is packed with cumin, chili powder and paprika for maximum flavor.
Versatile: These baked avocado fries can be eaten on their own or you can dip them into all of your favorite dipping sauces! These are a great appetizer and they are totally packed with healthy fats! To make a meal out of it, it makes a great topping on tacos or nachos, or even inside a burrito! Plus, if you are following a keto diet, avocado fries are a great alternative to regular fries!
Ingredients
- Avocados: The star of the show here is avocado! You will need two large avocados for this recipe, but you can feel free to double this recipe for more servings!
- Egg: You need egg to help the panko breadcrumb mixture stick to the avocado fries!
- Flour: Whenever you are breading something, dipping it in flour first, then eggs and then breadcrumbs is the best way to make sure the breading sticks! This way, the avocado fries will be super crispy!
- Panko Breadcrumbs: I like to use panko breadcrumbs because they are extra crispy!
- Salt: Don’t forget to season the flour with salt!
- Taco Seasoning or Chili Powder: For extra flavor, you can season the flour with taco seasoning as well. If you don’t have taco seasoning on hand, try just a bit of chili powder!
- Cayenne Pepper: For a hint of spice, I also add a small pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.
- For Serving: Flaky sea salt and lime wedges are all you need for some extra flavor when serving!
Here’s How to Make It
Step by Step Instructions
- Prep Breading Station: First, prepare your breading station. Lightly beat the egg in a shallow bowl and set aside. Combine the flour, salt, taco seasoning or chili powder, and cayenne pepper in a shallow bowl, and set aside. Tip the panko breadcrumbs into a third bowl.
- Slice Avocado: Peel and halve the avocados, removing the pits before slicing into roughly thick 6 spears per avocado. (photo 1)
- Bread the Fries: Coat the avocado spears first into the flour mixture, then the egg, then the breadcrumbs. Use one hand for the egg and another for the dry ingredients to avoid coating your fingers! (photos 2-4)
- To Cook in the Air Fryer: Spritz the breaded avocado spears with cooking spray and cook at 400 for 15 minutes, turning halfway. (photo 5)
- To Cook in the Oven: Preheat the oven to 430 F while you are preparing the avocado. Spread out on a parchment lined baking sheet and spritz with cooking spray. Bake for 20 minutes, turning halfway. (photo 6)
- Serve & Enjoy: Serve sprinkled with flaky salt with the fresh lime wedges squeezed over the top and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- You can use underripe avocados! The beauty of this recipe is that you can use up any avocados that are a little on the hard side. They will stand up to the breading and baking process a little better and soften up in the heat!
- Spray with cooking spray for a crispy outer layer! It is important to spray with cooking spray to get a golden brown, crispy outer layer! If you are using the air fryer method, just make sure to use pure olive oil spray since some of the synthetic sprays can damage the air fryer.
- Don’t forget to turn them! Flipping the avocado fries in the middle of the cooking process helps to get them crispy and golden on all sides!
Frequently Asked Questions
Serve avocado fries with some of my favorite dipping sauces like cilantro avocado ranch or some greek yogurt ranch! You can also serve avocado fries alongside anything that you would eat regular fries with like chipotle barbecue burgers or pesto chicken sliders!
Avocado is actually a fruit! It might seem like it is a vegetable since it is green and has an earthy flavor, but avocados are in the same family as berries!
