Why This Recipe Works
Packed with Flavor: If you have never had bang bang sauce, you are in for a treat! These chicken is first marinated in the sauce and then coated in more sauce after grilling to ensure maximum flavor. Bang bang sauce is commonly used on shrimp, but it is super delicious with chicken, too! Made with mayonnaise, sweet red chili sauce, Dijon mustard, and honey, bang bang sauce is easy to prepare and the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors!
Easy to Make: Bang bang chicken kabobs are actually so easy to make! Since the chicken and veggies are cut into small pieces, they cook in a short amount of time. Dinner will be on the table in no time! You can serve this chicken with a simple side of rice or roasted potatoes!
Ingredients
For the Skewers
- Chicken Breast: I like to use chicken breast here, but you can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs! Dice up the chicken into bite sized pieces.
- Bell Peppers: I used one red bell pepper and one green bell pepper here. You can use whatever you have on hand!
- Onion: Add some onion too, because grilled onions are just so delicious!
For the Sauce
- Mayo: The base of the sauce is mayonnaise, but you can use low fat mayo if you prefer!
- Greek Yogurt: Add some Greek yogurt for a bit of a tangy flavor. You can use sour cream instead if you prefer.
- Dijon Mustard: Dijon mustard adds a depth of flavor and a little kick of spice.
- Sweet Red Chili Sauce: Sweet red chili sauce is the essential ingredients in bang bang sauce. It adds a slightly sweet, slightly spicy flavor that is so delicious!
- Sriracha: For added spice, I like to add a bit of sriracha. If you are sensitive to spicy foods, you can omit this.
- Honey: For a little added sweetness, and it will help the chicken caramelize beautifully on the grill!
Here’s How to Make It
Step by Step Instructions
- Prep & Marinade: If using wooden skewers, soak for 30 minutes before grilling so they won’t burn. Add chicken pieces and 1/2 of the sauce to a zip lock bag and toss to coat. Chill 15 minutes. (photo 1)
- Make Skewers: Preheat your grill and brush with oil. Skewer your chicken pieces and discard marinade. Skewer the peppers and onions. I like to do this on separate skewers from the chicken because the veggies tend to be done before the chicken. (photo 2)
- Grill: Place skewers on the preheated grill and cook about 4-5 minutes. Turn over skewers and cook another 4-5 minutes. When the chicken is cooked through and starts to get a bit of a char, remove from the grill. Pour remaining sauce over the chicken skewers. Serve warm and enjoy! (photos 3-6)
Expert Tips
- It is best to use metal skewers on the grill! You can use wooden skewers as well, but they are prone to burning on the grill. Make sure you soak them in water for at least 30 minutes so that they are moist and less likely to burn!
- Double the sauce! If you are a sauce fan like I am, you might want to double the sauce so you have plenty for dipping!
- Adjust the spice! You can make these bang bang skewers as spicy as you’d like. They are slightly spicy with the sweet chili sauce, but you can make them extra spicy with the addition of sriracha! Or, omit the sriracha for a more mild flavor.

These look and sound amazing! I’m making them for a BBQ tomorrow – would there be anything wrong with marinating them longer? Say 12-24 hours? Thanks! ๐
It is so nice
If i dont grill can i cook these in my toas oven?sherry
Yes- you can! ๐
These were SO good!!!! We used peppers, mushrooms, and zucchini and made coconut rice for a side, as another reviewer suggested, which complimented it perfectly. This will definitely be on repeat in my house.
I haven’t made this yet, but looking forward to it. We have a little Ninja Foodi Smoker grill and this is perfect for it. I love these recipes because they are kidney friendly and has to be low in sodium and no processed foods. So this will adapt well to that.
We love love this recipe! One of our favorites. Now that itโs winter how can we bring this recipe indoors? Any suggestions for cooking inside?
Any indoor grill, such as a George Foreman, grill pan or even a skillet should work ๐ These would even work in the oven!
